History of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, since its first appearance in 1979, there have been 4, 5, 6, 8 and 12 cylinder models. By April 2024, the German parent brand added a “0-cylinder” version, a completely new pure electric version for the G-Class.
The chosen car name is not EQG as expected but a rather long and strange name: G580 EQ Technology. This factor shows that either Mercedes-Benz wants to separate the electric G-Class from the rest of its electric vehicle lineup, or is preparing to rename electric vehicles en masse.
Design
Compared to the concept released in January 2023, Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology has not changed much. The color scheme of the finished product looks dustier and wilder than the original concept at that time. The rest, notable details such as round daytime lights or closed radiator with light edges are maintained.

The overall body shape of the car is generally not much different from the regular G-Class, similar to the body distribution ratio. Some small elements are applied to optimize aerodynamics, such as a slightly raised hood or directional air vents near the rear wheel arch. The rear of the car can add a spare tire or a storage box to hold essential items such as charging cables.
Transmission system
The most distinctive new feature on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology comes from the powertrain. 4 electric motors divided equally among 4 wheels give a total capacity of 579 horsepower, torque up to 1,165Nm. Compared to the strongest AMG G63 in the old G-Class lineup, the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology parameters are 2 horsepower and 315Nm superior.
The above configuration allows the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, 0.4 seconds slower than the AMG G63. Maximum vehicle speed is also limited to 180 km/h.
Off-road capabilities
In return, the huge and, most importantly, instantaneous torque (thanks to being an electric vehicle) helps the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology have the ability to operate off-road, promising to surpass the G63. The car’s water wading ability is also superior at a maximum of 850mm compared to only 700mm of other versions.
Ground clearance of 249mm, approach angle of 32 degrees, departure angle of 30.7 degrees and departure angle of 20.3 degrees are some of the off-road operating parameters announced for the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology. Ability to climb slopes up to 45 degrees.
Technology included
G-Turn technology rotates 360 degrees in place, as the company has promoted before, appearing for the first time on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology. Accompanying this technology is G-Steering which supports steering to significantly reduce the turning radius, thereby increasing the flexibility of this SUV in tight spaces.
The suspension system on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology is independent at the front and rigid axle at the rear. The car’s underbody has a protective frame made from carbon and other durable materials to protect the giant 116 kWh battery located under the car floor. The operating range of the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology has not been announced, the company only said that charging from 10 to 80% using fast charging technology takes 32 minutes.
Interior like G-Class
Stepping into the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology cabin, those who have experienced the G-Class will certainly feel familiar, even… unable to see the difference unless compared directly with photos.
At the time of launch, the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology had a special edition called Edition One. This version has many unique features that are easier to recognize than the regular G-Class, such as carbon fiber panels and green stitching that adorn the overall dark interior or green brakes on the outside. Only this version has G-Roar technology by default, which simulates the sound of the G-Class engine when the car accelerates.
The price of the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Technology has not been announced, but the appearance of the new powertrain promises to push the car’s price up significantly. The regular G-Class currently has a reference starting price of 144,150 USD (3.66 billion VND).
