Striker Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, posted on social media his joy at breaking the record for goals in a Saudi Pro League season.
Ronaldo published on the three social networks in which he participates, including Instagram , Facebook and Captain Al Nassr also wrote a comment: “I don’t chase records, but records chase me.”
This is not the first time Ronaldo has said or written like this, because he did the same when he broke Pelé’s all-time scoring record in March 2021, or surpassed Ali Daei’s record of playing for a national team at Euro 2021 .In recent years, almost every year he has said that he is chasing a record.
This time, the Portuguese superstar broke striker Abderrazak Hamdallah’s record with Al Nassr in the 2018-2019 season with 34 goals. In the 69th minute, the last game of the season against Al Ittihad, Ronaldo jumped high and headed in a corner from Marcelo Brozovic to increase the score to 2-1 for Al Nassr. This goal marked a new record for Ronaldo with 35 goals in the 2023-2024 season. He also screamed and his eyes turned red as he celebrated the goal.
Ronaldo raised the all-time record to 893 goals, 60 goals ahead of second-placed Lionel Messi. In all competitions this season, the 39-year-old forward scored 50 goals in 50 games. And if he maintains this form over the next two years, he can aim to reach 1,000 goals. He once said that was his goal before hanging up his shoes.
Ronaldo also won the 2023-2024 Saudi League top scorer award, but Al Nassr only finished second, 14 points behind Al Hilal. Luis Castro’s army also made it to the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League and the semi-finals of the Saudi Arabian Super Cup. They only won one title this season, the Arab Club Champions Cup. Ronaldo and his teammates have one last chance to win another title, with the Copa del Rey final against Al Hilal on Friday night, May 31.
