Sunny Edwards has signed his next fight –– just days after inking a new promotional pact.
The IBF flyweight king recently joined forces with Eddie Hearn and has long had designs on unifying in the 112-pound division that he is currently sat at the top of the tree of.
Edwards was always on the hunt to meet the WBC champion, Julio Cesar Martinez, prior to joining him under the Matchroom banner last week.
But the attention now appears to have turned to Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
‘Bam’ is coming down from the super-flyweight division, where he picked up the WBC title against Carlos Cuadras last year, and is currently ranked number one by the WBO and will contest their flyweight crown on Saturday (April 8) against the number two contender Cristian Gonzalez at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas.
And ‘Showtime’ appears to have agreed his side of the bargain to take on the 23-year-old (17-0, 11 KOs) sooner rather than later.
“[I have] accepted my side of things to fight [Jesse Rodriguez] next,” Edwards tweeted alongside a picture with his new promoter Hearn. “Let’s see who’s really [a]bout what.”
The younger brother of former WBC champion Charlie Edwards –– who is now up at bantamweight and bizarrely called out his younger brother in the wake of his new deal with Hearn –– has a record of 19-0 with just four stoppages and was last in action at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield when he unanimously outpointed Felix Alvarado in the third defence of the crown he won at Bethnal Green’s famous York Hall venue back in April 2021 when he dethroned long-time champion Moruti Mthalane.
