One of Toyota’s Best Land Cruisers Ever Is Back Again in All Its Retro Glory

The U.S. isn’t the only country getting a new Toyota Land Cruiser in 2024.

The Japanese auto giant has just reintroduced the Land Cruiser 70 in its home country. The refreshed SUV combines a gorgeous, old-school exterior with some modern conveniences that should make it easier to handle than previous versions.

The Land Cruiser 70, or J70, was introduced globally in 1984. It’s a heavy-duty vehicle meant primarily for commercial use and remains a hit to this day, especially in regions like Australia, Latin America and the Middle East. Despite this, the model hasn’t been available in Japan since 2004, with the exception of a single year last decade, according to Motor1. One imagines, its return will be a reason for celebration back home.

The new Land Cruiser J250 that just launched here may have more sharp edges than recent generations, but the J70 is about as boxy as can be. In fact, the six-door SUV looks almost the same today as it did way back in 1984, down to its badging, passenger-side fender mirror, and optional yellow fog lamps. It may feel a tad old-fashioned to some, but we have a feeling the retro look will leave most 4×4 lovers drooling,

The vehicle’s interior is as much of a throwback. The cabin looks rather stripped-down compared to most of today’s SUVs. There are some new features that should make driving the vehicle a little easier, though, like a rearview monitor located atop the center stack. There are also plenty of buttons, dials, and knobs for those who’ve grown tired of the touchscreen life.

The 4×4 will be available will be available with a single powertrain—unlike in other regions—a 2.8-liter turbo inline-four diesel engine. The direct-injection mill comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and produces 201 hp and 369 ft lbs of torque. It also features some tech you won’t find on the original J70, including Hill Start Assist Control, Downhill Assist Control, and electronic differentials.

Japan’s new Land Cruiser 70 is part of the 2024 lineup and starts at ¥4.8 million (roughly $32,000). Unfortunately, as you may have caught on to by now, it is a Japanese market exclusive. That means that the Land Cruiser J250 will have to tide over Americans for now—at least until an electric version of the SUV arrives.
