Adult red squirrels have an average length of 19-23cm, with a tail length of 15-20cm. Its weight ranges from 250-340g. Males and females have similar appearance and body size. Squirrel tails are often very large and have long hair, making it easy for them to fly and jump from tree to tree.
The red squirrel’s fur changes according to time and place of residence. Their fur is usually black, gray, brown and red. The belly fur of red squirrels is usually creamy white.
The breeding season of red squirrels is from late winter from February to March and summer from June to July. Pregnancy period is from 38-39 days. Each litter usually gives birth to 3-4 cubs. After 3-4 weeks, baby squirrels will open their eyes and ears. They will have full teeth when they are 42 days old. When 8-10 weeks old, baby squirrels will be weaned by their mother. Its average lifespan is 7-10 years in captivity.
The red squirrel’s favorite foods are nuts (chestnuts, acorns…), mushrooms, fruits, young shoots, bird eggs… Its active time is morning and late afternoon and evening. Currently, red squirrels have been included in the IUCN red list.
