Virgil Abloh’s limited-edition vehicle is unveiled by Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz, the renowned German car brand, has unveiled a collaboration project with the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh’s Off-White brand. The venture includes a car called “Maybach by Virgil Abloh” and a clothing collection designed by Off-White.

Virgil Abloh’s Maybach is based on the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 model and takes inspiration from a show car revealed in December of the previous year. This limited-edition car was personally designed by Abloh before he passed away in November, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz design director Gorden Wagener. The collaboration represents a fusion of automotive and fashion design, reflecting Abloh’s innovative and creative vision in the automotive world.

In fact, Virgil Abloh’s Maybach was designed by both Virgil Abloh and Gorden Wagener. Available in a limited run of just 150 units, the car is based on the Maybach Project prototype design, a two-tone solar-powered vehicle with a hood. transparent, which was also a collaborative effort with Abloh. While the S-Class design retains the two-tone color scheme of the show car, the translucent hood will not be featured on the production version of the for-sale vehicle. “Because Project Maybach was a show car, we had complete creative freedom, allowing us to conceptually explore what the future of electric travel could look like,” Wagener explained to Dezeen. “Due to production requirements, we had to take a different approach to the design of the limited-edition S-Class from Mercedes-Maybach,” he continued.

The limited-edition S-Class maintains the iconic two-tone color scheme used on the Project Maybach prototype. The black and sand color combination, which was a distinctive design element of the concept car, carries over to both the interior and exterior of the limited-edition vehicle. “The Project Maybach two-tone colorway remains, and is the most striking design element connecting the limited edition to Project Maybach,” Wagener explained. “It is skillfully done on both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. While the upper part of the vehicle is painted in high-gloss obsidian black, the lower part, the side flanks and the special forged wheels are painted in a sand tone. ” This harmonious combination of colors contributes to the luxurious and visually captivating appeal of the car.

Virgil Abloh’s Maybach design is based on a show car that was unveiled in 2021. Inside the four-seater, the interior also follows the same black and sand color theme. The steering wheel, doors, lower dash, and headlining are trimmed in black and sand-colored Nappa leather, complemented by sand-colored trim and accent strips. The car will feature the Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logos, adding a touch of exclusivity. Unlike the original show car, Virgil Abloh’s Maybach for sale is not electric. Instead, it is equipped with a gasoline engine, which offers a combined WLTP fuel consumption of 14.3-13.4 liters per 100 kilometers. However, Mercedes-Maybach remains fully committed to an electric future and plans to launch its first all-electric Mercedes-Maybach model in the markets in 2023. “Mercedes-Maybach is fully committed to an electric future, and while Maybach by Virgil Abloh is a very limited edition launching before this capability is offered, we will bring the first all-electric Mercedes-Maybach model to the markets in 2023,” Wagener explained. This indicates the dedication of the brand to embrace sustainable mobility in the near future.

Accompanying the Maybach by Virgil Abloh car will be a capsule collection of Abloh’s Off-White brand. According to the designer, the brand always intended to create a version of the concept car for sale. “Offering a purchasable element was key to Maybach’s second collaboration with Virgil, and the intention was always to provide our customers with an unparalleled luxury design experience through the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the capsule collection created together with Virgil. in 2021,” he said. “With this presentation, we bring to Mercedes-Maybach a completely unique legacy car,” he added, emphasizing the exceptional and distinctive nature of the collaborative project.

In addition to the car itself, Mercedes-Benz collaborated with Abloh’s Off-White brand on a capsule collection, also designed by Abloh. This collection includes pieces in the same colors as the car, with sand cotton crew neck T-shirts in fleece cotton, hoodies, canvas baseball caps and racing gloves in canvas, neoprene and suede. The gloves have been coated with a black spray effect and embroidered, adding a unique and elegant touch to the collection. The clothing line perfectly complements the Maybach by Virgil Abloh automotive design, creating a cohesive and exclusive luxury experience for fashion and automotive enthusiasts alike.

The capsule collection will include gloves and jumpers, adding to the variety of fashion offerings designed in collaboration with Abloh’s Off-White brand. Working with Abloh has significantly redefined the possibilities for collaboration in fashion and automotive, Wagener says. “Virgil was a creative that all of us here at Mercedes-Benz greatly admired,” Wagener said. “Between the potential innovations within the Mercedes-Benz teams and Virgil’s unique ability as a cultural visionary, the opportunity was really to redefine what a fashion-automotive collaboration could look like. Virgil was a huge car enthusiast and brought in interesting new perspectives; a ‘question everything’ approach, for which he will definitely be remembered.” Customers who purchase the limited edition S-Class will receive a custom-made wooden box containing a 1/18 scale replica of the car, the two car keys, a carabiner and a special car cover with the Mercedes-Maybach and Logo of Virgilio Abloh. The brand has previously worked with Abloh on the design of the Geländewagen Project, a concept race car version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a four-wheel drive luxury SUV. Abloh passed away at the age of 41 in November of last year from an aggressive form of cancer. The visionary designer, who was the artistic director of the Louis Vuitton menswear collection, was remembered by artists and creatives around the world, including David Adjaye and Dong-Ping Wong. His final collection for Louis Vuitton was designed as an ode to his eight previous shows for the brand, leaving a lasting legacy in the fashion industry.
